Kartikeya is one of the lesser known Hindu gods in the west. He is the second son of Lord Shiva and Parvati. He has a host of names: Guha (the cave-dweller), Skanda (born out of the life source that slipped from Shiva), Shadanana (one with six faces), Subramaniam (omniscient one), Sanmukha, and Kumara among others. He is better known as Murugan, his name in southern India. His stories are told in the “Mahabharata” and the “Ramayana.” Kartikeya was created to destroy our demons, that is, our negative tendencies. When he is called Shadanana, the six heads refer to our five senses and our mind (which get us into troubles). He also has six heads to be able to see in all directions so that nothing can sneak up on him/us. He protects humanity. If you wish to battle your demons this life, Kartikeya models the behavior needed: you need to be alert for crafty people who would show you the wrong path via the six demonic vices: sex, anger, greed, passion, your ego, and jealousy. Our Kartikeya statue shows him standing in front of his vehicle, the peacock, a pious bird that grips with its feet a serpent. The serpent symbolizes your ego and your desires. The peacock is the destroyer of harmful habits and the conqueror of sensual ways.—
