The poster of Mother Lakshmi (also spelled Laxmi) is in traditional Indian form. It is highly ornate, colorful and embellished with gold leaf. The poster is radiant, much like this well-loved goddess. Her name comes from the Sanskrit word “lakS”, which translates as to perceive or observe. Lakshmi is also synonymous with “laksya”, which means aim or objective. When combined, her name translates as the goddess of the means to achieving objectives. Lakshmi is the goddess most mentioned in the Vedas. It is said she came into being from the waters of Mother Ocean. Lakshmi is the consort of Vishnu and accompanied him when he incarnated on earth. She was Sita to his Lord Rama (see “The Ramayana” in our book section) and Krishna’s Queen Rukmini. The coins falling from her hands symbolize her showering you with prosperity. The elephants are symbols of Lakshmi’s royal power. She stands in the center of a lotus flower, a symbol of purity and spiritual power. Lakshmi is shown rising from the lotus with its roots in earthly contamination (muddy waters) through purity. The lotus is a symbol for fertile organic life.
