The modest 4” painted wooden OM wall art is an attractive addition to any room’s décor. It can be viewed as simply an interesting art piece. However, others see it as a reminder to do certain yoga practices and many of its symbolic meanings. It is said that the three sounds of the word OM comprise your three states of consciousness: waking, dreaming, and deep sleep. The first sound in OM is “a” – which you pronounce like the “a” in “accounting”. This first sound represents the waking state of consciousness. The dream state exists between deep sleep and your waking state of consciousness. It is represented by the second sound in OM, “u”. This “u” is pronounced like the “u” in “would”. The final part of the sound of OM is “m”. It is said like the “m” in “sum” and is symbolic of your deep sleep state. This closing sound of OM ties in with the fact that deep sleep is the final stage of your mind as it rests. A fourth state of consciousness exists. It is called the “turiya” state and comes between successive repetitions of OM. Turiya is a state of bliss where duality slips away and you recognize your identity with the supreme oneness. –
