Dear Spiritual Explorer: I love shopping for different items at Ma’s India. I see you have jute bracelets. What is jute? Rose P., Baltimore, MD

Dear Rose: I always like to say that Ma’s India is on the qui vive for sustainable products, a French term meaning “on the lookout.” What’s new are our three types of jute bracelets.

Jute Bracelet

Remember when unisex became popular? I think the plain jute bracelet is definitely of the unisex variety, equally to be worn by male and female. It’s a rugged looking bracelet and gives off the air of someone who likes a “natural” way of life. In fact, you can take this bracelet anywhere, whether camping, skiing or hiking, a neat adornment when doing some outdoor stuff.

The Jute Bracelet with Glass Beads and Jute Bracelet with Wooden Beads are bracelets that make more of a fashion statement with their various colored beads and perhaps can be worn to accessorize an outfit and please an eye that looks for color.

Did you know that jute is a natural vegetable fiber and meeting sustainable requirements, is biodegradable? In fact, jute matting is used to prevent flood erosion while natural vegetation becomes established.

Not often heard about, jute is the second most important vegetable fiber after cotton. A sturdy fiber, it is used chiefly to make cloth for wrapping bales of raw cotton and to make sacks and coarse cloth. The fibers are also woven into curtains, chair coverings, carpets, and area rugs.

Used in multitudinous ways, jute is very useful for sustainable purposes and we are proud to carry on that ideal.
