Ocean. A great title for a great CD. Mirabai Ceiba, the duo of Angelika Baumbach and Markus Sieber, has a very unique approach to chant music. They don’t limit themselves to traditional Indian mantras (though they do appear), but branch out to include atypical chants like Irish blessings, Pawnee prayers and Sufi texts. Their musical style is equally original for the genre, with arrangements steeped in harp, gentle guitar, cello passages, Asian flutes and subtle percussion. Despite its rich multicultural leanings, Ocean’s music comes across as very humble and serene, with a strong sense of purity and spiritual longing. For example, the title track “Ocean,” which uses the mantra “Guru Guru Wahe Guru, Guru Ramdas Guru” as its central focus, features a lulling backdrop of sensitive guitar accented with cello and light synth atmosphere. Includes instrumental accompaniment from Thomas Barquee, Domonic Dean Breaux and Cameron Stone.-
- “Mirabai is for us the wandering, the devotion, the inspiration in all the different aspects of divinity,” say Baumbach and Sieber.
- Ocean, a very non-traditional spiritual experience.
